MEETING WITH CABINET SECRETARY

Empowered Committee of Secretaries headed by Cabinet Secretary has held first round of discussion with JCM National Council Standing Committee members on strike Charter of demands on 1st March 2016. Staff Side explained the justification of each and every demand and conveyed the large scale resentment among the Central Government Employees to the Cabinet Secretary . Cabinet Secretary has not made any commitment on any demand. He informed that this is only a preliminary interaction with the Staff Side.

KRISHI KALYAN CESS OF 0.5% ON ALL TAXABLE SERVICES

Krishi Kalyan Cess of 0.5% imposed on all taxable services in Union Budget 2016-17. Finance Minister Arun Jaitely in General Budget 2016-17 introduced Krishi Kalyan cess of .5% on all taxable services for agricultural sector. It will cost extra to consumers on all services like watching Movie, visit restaurants, booking tickets and all other services inline with swatch bharat cess imposed earlier.

45th Army Postal Service Corps Day celebrated

The 45th Army Postal Service Corps Day was celebrated at Tuticorin Head Post Office on Tuesday. During the programme, retired Army Postal service (APS) personnel shared their memories.

The participants paid tributes to Brig. D.S. Virk, AVSM, founder of Indian Army Postal Service Corps. The APS was recognised as a separate Corps on March 1, 1972, and the Brigadier was its head till June 30, 1973, Lt. Col. (Retd) M. Sundaram, who organised the programme, said.

The APS is the only army unit where civilian officers from the Department of Post on deputation donned army uniform and served as combatants. , Mr. Sundaram said that postal covers were printed on army, navy and air force and paramilitary forces in India. . The retired Colonel displayed a collection of his rare stamps and other memorabilia for people to view.

Besides, commemorative postage stamps, first day covers (FDC), special covers and miniature stamps and foreign stamps were also displayed. Special covers on International Control Commission (ICC) established in Combodia, Laos and Vietnam in August 1954, on bidding adieu to ICG Ship ‘Ahalyabai’ at Thoothukudi, Sawerpuram village settlement bi-centenary celebration, FDC on freedom fighter V.O. Chidambaram Pillai, Bishop Caldwell and Our Lady of Snows Shrine Basilica attracted the attention of the visitors.

The stamps recalled the contributions of freedom fighters and revealed the history of Thoothukudi. Stamps on ‘Salt Satyagraha,’ Army Medical Services, Army Postal Services and valiant deeds of the Indian Navy were also on display.

The world’s first khadi (cloth) postage stamp on Mahatma Gandhi, issued by India Post, attracted the attention of many visitors.

Students from various schools visited this philatelic exhibition and enjoyed seeing the pictorial stamps of depicting India’s social, cultural, and scientific development.

After Amazon, Flipkart and Naaptol tie up with Postal Dept.

The postal department is gaining ground as a popular e-commerce delivery platform with more online retailers tying up with it to deliver parcels. From March, post offices will start delivering orders of major players like Flipkart and Naaptol too.

At present, the department has tied up with 143 e-commerce players, the major one being Amazon, for delivery of articles in Tamil Nadu. Of these, nearly 100 are from Chennai. Nearly 5,500 products ordered online either through prepaid or cash-on-delivery modes are being delivered daily.

“We are now concentrating on faster delivery of articles on the same day and monitoring complaints for better delivery service,” said J.T. Venkateswarulu, Postmaster general (mails and business development) said.

The articles received at Ekkaduthangal warehouse and St.Thomas Mount Speed Post centre are despatched in three days. “Nearly 98 per cent of the products are now delivered directly on the same day to customers in the city. Instead of sending them through 65 delivery post offices in the city, these products are directly despatched from St. Thomas Mount. Flipkart is already delivering a few articles through post offices on a trial basis. It will start full-fledged operations in Chennai from March,” Mr.Venkateswarulu said.

Besides small and medium retailers, institutions like Tamil Nadu Open University also use the service. The department earned Rs.8.7 crore through e-commerce initiatives last year. Chennai contributes to nearly 50 per cent of the revenue. Of the Rs.370 crore revenue targeted this year (January to December), post offices plan to earn Rs.15 crore through e-commerce in the State, officials said. “We are expecting business to increase by nearly Rs.2.5 crore a year once Flipkart and Naaptol start providing products for delivery,” he added.

The department has also introduced a text message service where customers will be informed of product delivery by the postal staff members. Moreover, State Bank of India will start using speed post services of post offices to deliver debit cards and cheque books from March, officials added.
