CHENNAI: For the postmen and postwomen of Chennai, it was a different kind of walk on Friday. 40 of them took part in a first of its kind fashion parade for the postal department, meant to infuse pride in their work.
Many men in khaki were seen wearing ties and boots. Both the young and the seasoned walked the ramp.
Some were even quirky. M Muruganandham, who came wearing a cape, walked away with Rs.10000 as first prize.
"I'm very proud of working for the postal department. I'm actually a representative," he said.
The postwomen turned show stoppers, looking fashionable and colourful.
Adheera, an engineering post graduate, loves delivering letters. She made heads turn with her colourful umbrella.
"I meet new people every day and they wait for us daily. That makes me so happy," she said.
Another prize winner said, "I'm so happy. So surprised we have so much of talent."
Mervin Alexander, Post Master General, said, "They will have pride in this. They will turn up smart and ultimately improve customer service."
In this era of email and WhatsApp many may not wait for a postman or a postwoman. However, the occasion left them happy and proud that they are still wanted and relevant.
